Indigenous News Papers in North America - Database Overview and Tips

Adam Matthew's Indigenous Newspapers in North America provides immediate access to articles from 45 newspapers published from 1828 to 2016.

Document / source type: Newspaper articles.

Full text: 100% of articles available as an image, and downloadable as image PDFs.

Search Tips:

  • Basic search automatically takes words typed into the same search box as an exact phrase.  (It puts all of the words within quotation marks.)
  • In the basic search, separate your search concept into different terms or ideas, and place each term or idea into a different box.
    • For example:
      • "Wolves Dogs" typed into one box retrieves zero results.
      • Typing Wolves and Dogs into separate boxes retrieves 2000+ results which contain both terms.
  • Use the Advanced Search to use field, Boolean pull-downs, and pre-search limiting by newspaper/location.

Accessing the full-text:

From a page displaying the entire issue of the newspaper, choose the Download an Entire PDF or Download Image Range options from the top menu.

From a page displaying an individual article, click the arrow next to View Issue to access the Adobe PDF icon Download Image link.

Field Searching:

  • Advanced search supports search fields for keywords, newspaper title, publisher, and location.

Searching for content in OneSearch

Titles of the entire newspaper only from this collection are listed in OneSearch (all scopes), with a generic entry for each issue. (Example record.)  Individual articles from this collection are not listed in OneSearch, and need to be searched in the Adam Matthew interface.

Citing / Emailing / Saving:

Citing an article from Indigenous Newspapers:

  • The INNA collection does not provide automatic citation features.
  • Use the information from the screen to cite the newspapers articles as articles / newspaper articles in your preferred style (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.). You will need the article title, author (if any), newspaper title, date and page.

Email:

  • From the search results screen, you can email a list of titles which match your search, including the article title, newspaper title, date, and starting page number.  The emails will also include links to individual records, but these links will work on-campus only. Return to the library's Databases A-Z page to access the database and search for the articles.

    • Automatic Boolean AND between search boxes.
    • Within a basic search box,  use quotation marks around terms to add Boolean to your search.
      • Example:   "Wolves" AND NOT "Dogs"

Phrase Searching

  • Unless you add quotation marks, basic search treats words in the same box as an exact phrase.
  • Use quotation marks to separate terms or exact phrases within a search box.

  • * = stemming / truncation wildcard

Proximity

    • w/#

Basic Search

Default search in a single search box puts terms into an exact phrase (adding quotation marks).

Default operator between boxes is a Boolean AND.

Add quotes around a term or phrase in a single search box separates quoted text with a Boolean AND.

Examples for terms typed in a search box:

Wolves dogs - zero results (exact phrase)

Wolves OR dogs - 8 results (exact phrase)

Wolves AND NOT dogs - 29 results  (exact phrase)

"Wolves" "Dogs" - 2000+ results  (default Boolean AND)

"Wolves" AND "Dogs" - 2000+ results

"Wolves" OR "Dogs" - 11,000+ results

"Wolves" AND NOT "Dogs - 1000+ results

Advanced Search

  • Does not use automatic phrase search within a box, but searches for terms separately (Boolean AND).
  • Field Searching:
    • Advanced search supports search fields for keywords, newspaper title, publisher, and location.
