Database overview:
After the previous Iraqi government closed two major English language newspapers, they established the Baghdad Observer at the end of 1976. When the Ba’athists rose to power in 1968, the government continued the Baghdad Observer as their official English-language newspaper.
The paper provides alternate views on major events in the Middle East, including the Iranian Revolution, the Iran-Iraq War, and the first Gulf War. As an official publication, it covered the cult of personality around Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi Ba'athist de-emphasizing pan-Arabism, leftism, and anti-imperialism, during a period of ethnic and sectarian repression within the country.
