JSTOR Global Plants is an online collection of images and scientific notes on plant specimens.

Search Tips / Options:

Basic search:

Names: Searches for official specimen or family name.

Free text: All words in the description.

Advanced Search option provides for field searching, including Family, Genus, Epithet, Herbarium Code, Herbarium Name, and Type.

Full text: 100% of records include the full-text (usually an image and notes on the specimen).

Citing an item: No citation generator available.

Saving an item: JSTOR PDF download icon   Click the PDF icon from an entry.

Detailed Description

Database Content:

  • JSTOR Global Plants is the world’s largest database of digitized plant specimens and a locus for international scientific research and collaboration.
  • Includes about 3 million entries, primarily Herbarium specimens.
  • The largest of its kind, Global Plants consists of 66 sub-collections, showcasing hand-selected specimens that have been meticulously digitized by partner herbaria with generous support from the Mellon Foundation. This resource also features partner-contributed reference works and primary sources, such as collectors’ correspondence and diaries, illustrations, and photographs.
  • Selected sub-collections include reference works and books such as The Useful Plants of West Tropical Africa, illustrations from Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, and Kew’s Directors’ Correspondence.
