Indigenous Histories and Cultures: Database Overview and Tips

Adam Matthew's Indigenous Histories and Cultures in North America provides immediate access to the full-text of written sources and rare printed books, dating from early European colonization to photographs and newspapers from the mid-twentieth century. Types of sources include treaties, speeches, diaries, historic maps, and travel journals.

Search Tips - Useful Limiters

  • In the advanced search, limit by region, theme, and/or document type.

Searchable in OneSearch

Individual items are listed and linked in OneSearch, when searching the EverythingArticles, or Beyond Scopes. (Example OneSearch record.)

OneSearch only contains item titles and brief subject headings for the entire document.  To search for text within the document, use the Adam Matthew interface search features.

Citing / Emailing / Saving:

Citing an item from this collection:

  • The Indigenous Histories and Cultures collection does not provide automatic citation features.
  • Use the information from the Document Details to cite the document in your preferred style (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.). Note especially any title, date, author, publisher, and place of publication.  The document type may help guide you on which examples / instructions to look for in your style manual.

Email:

  • Use the Share icon near the top / next to the Collection title to email a link to your current screen.  You will have to have an email program accessible from your web browser to email the link.  The links will only work on-campus.  If you are off-campus, you will need to access the resource through the library (e.g. Databases A-Z or OneSearch).

Advanced Search Tips

Booleans

  • Advanced search drop-downs:  AND, OR, NOT
  • Basic search: AND, OR, NOT in upper-case
    • Example: “Oregon” AND “Utah”

Field searching:

  • Advanced search drop-downs:
    • Keywords, Title, Author, Indigenous Peoples

Phrase Searching

  • Use Quotation marks (double-quotes: "Oregon Trail") to search for exact phrases.
  • Basic search automatically uses OR unless quotation marks or other Booleans are used.

Stemming / Truncation:

  • Automatic in advanced search
