Prompt engineering is the process of communicating with AI to generate the required result. Similar to the way that we use and change our combinations of keywords to guide databases to find sources for our research, prompt engineering is a way to guide Generative AI tools to deliver the information we need.
There is no right or wrong way to draft the prompt that works best for you. It can be a matter of trial and error to determine what works or doesn’t work for your topic.
It is important that your prompts are always precise, clear, and provide context for the response you want to receive. The more generic your prompt, the more generic your response will be.
Below are some tips to help you develop effective prompts:
Be specific about the output you want
Do you want a single sentence or a 250-word response?
Do you want the response to be understandable by a 3rd grader or in a more professional tone?
What format do you want your response to be? (e.g. outline, bullet points, paragraph)
examples
references to information you already know
Is your question or need very complex? If so, divide it into smaller prompts.
Test and clarify.
If you are not getting the output you want, ask follow up questions or provide more context in your next prompt.
