Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence)

This guide will provide pointers on how to responsibly use generative AI, such as ChatGPT and other tools, in your courses.

What is Generative AI?

Generative AI is a web-based category of Artificial Intelligence that produces new content in response to text input by the user. The new content can include text, images, video, and audio.  Some Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, use information derived from its most recent update or "training" to generate a response. This means that it may not always have the most accurate and up-to-date information because it's training may only include information up to a certain date. Other tools, such as Copilot by Microsoft Bing, take data from search engines and may have slightly more current information.

AI, including generative AI tools, is constantly changing and improving. While these tools are useful in the way they can summarize or create creative content, they can also make up or “hallucinate” inaccurate information.

See the samples below to determine both accurate and "hallucinations" created by two separate Generative AI tools.

Adobe Firefly

When asked for an image of "Vasché Library at Stanislaus State University campus in Turlock, CA with the Warrior mascot standing in front." Adobe Firefly provided the following options:

Copilot by Microsoft Bing

When asked to "Describe the Vashé Library at Stanislaus State University," Copilot responded with the following:

The Vasché Library at Stanislaus State University is named after the university's first president, Dr. J. Burton Vasché1. The library offers a variety of services including an online catalog, research help, research & information literacy instruction, computer workstations, and wireless access to the Internet1. The library building also houses the Technology Support Desk for students, Academic Success Center, Learning Commons (Testing, Tutoring Center, Writing Center), Warrior Cross Cultural Center, Disability Resource Services, and state-of-the-art computer labs1. The library has three floors, with quiet study seats and areas, including reservable group study rooms, available throughout the library1. The building's interior reflects the agricultural landscape of the region, which is the beating heart of a community intrinsically tied to the Earth2

I hope this helps!
