Recommended Search Tools

Concept to Keywords Search Tips:

  • Instead of searching for "natural language," break down your topic into main concepts.
  • Place each concept in a separate line in the CINAHL Advanced Search.
  • If you receive few results, changed/adjust the terms you use for one of your concepts.
  • Use scientific/professional terms when possible. 
  • Use terms from the Major Subject Headings, title or abstract to increase results.
  • Example:
    • Vancomycin AND pathopharmacology - zero results
    • Vancomycin AND pharmacology - 91 results
    • Vancomycin AND nephrology - 14 results
    • Vancomycin AND nephrology - 531 results
    • Vancomycin Administration and Dosage AND kidney - 193 results

CINAHL tips:

  • Limit to peer-reviewed  (90% of articles in CINAHL)
  • Limit to full-text 
    • This is ffull-text available via a Stan State EBSCO subscription.
    • Other full-text may be immediately available via "Find It!" button.
  • Full-text:
    • Access options - usually means full-text is available by clicking on Access Options button
    • Search for full-text 
      • Library may have full-text via another / non-EBSCO source.
      • Click "Search for Full-text" button to search OneSearch
        • OneSearch may link to full-text immediately online.
        • OneSearch may link to request button (PDF usually delivered in 1 to 3 days).

  • Key concepts:
    • Vancomycin AND pharmacology 
  • Results
    • Total: 91
    • Peer-reviewed only: 84
    • Full-text: 12

To focus search, use terms in subject headings:

  • Vancomycin Administration and Dosage AND kidney - 193 results
  • In advanced search, change All Fields to subject:
    • Vancomycin Administration and Dosage  (Subject - SU)  AND kidney (SUBJECT SU) -  156 resutls
  • 156 results should be articles focused on dosage of Vancomycin and effect on kidneys

Tips for Searching OneSearch for Nursing Articles:

  • Be sure you are searching Articles, Everything or CSU Collections Beyond
  • On the search results screen:
    • Be sure to limit your search to Articles and Peer Reviewed Journals
    • If you have too many results from non-Nursing journals, limit to Nursing under Subject.
