The University Library is proud to celebrate Women's History Month in March. It is a dedicated time to honor the achievements and important contributions women have had on history and continue to make today.
Women's History celebrations began in 1978 in Sonoma, CA, in which The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women established Women’s History Week celebrations. The week of March 8 was selected to correspond with International Women’s Day.
The movement gained traction across the country, and was adopted as National Women's History Week by President Jimmy Carter through Presidential Proclamation in 1980, due to the successful lobbying of women's organization. Each year following, Presidential Proclamations were made declaring Women's History Week, until 1987 when Congress passed a resolution declaring March as Women’s History Month.
For March 2025, the National Women's History Alliance has selected the theme of “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”
