Interpreting Spanish Colonialism: empires, nations, and legends by
Interpreting Spanish Colonialism offers a compelling examination of how historians in Spain and the Americas have come to understand and write about the Spanish colonial past and its meanings for national presents. Working from a transnational perspective, the book brings together scholars of Spain, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. The eight essays situate historians' writings within the context of their day, suggesting how "history" has--perhaps more often than not--responded to present-day needs, agendas, and expectations. This collection retraces the link between historiography and nation-building in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It also explores how and why Spain and its colonies came to be depicted as "backward" and "marginal" to other European and U.S. "modern" regimes. Finally, it questions the contours of contemporary discussions of colonial and postcolonial histories that have remained largely silent about the legacies of centuries of Spanish rule.

Misoginia y Percepcion de la Mujer en Clasicos de la Literatura Espanola by
La finalidad primordial del ensayo Misoginia y percepcion de la mujer en clasicos de la literatura espanola, consiste en ordenar y comentar textos literarios que, escritores espanoles de reconocida prestancia literaria, han dedicado a la cuestion femenina. Se ha atendido, tanto a los que han adoptado actitudes igualitarias o defensivas, como a los que han despreciado, atacado o insultado al sexo opuesto. Esto ha permitido, por una parte, ahondar en el conocimiento del pensamiento patriarcal, y conocer mejor su evolucion y trayectoria. Tambien ha supuesto adentrarse en el intringulis de la mente humana al atender las diferentes sensibilidades mostradas por escritores varones, en una sociedad estructurada sobre las diferencias entre los sexos. Por otra parte, se dan pistas para relacionar dichas sensibilidades con hechos sociales, economicos y politicos que van mas alla de las actitudes personales, aunque no dejan de trenzarse con ellas. Solo asi podemos entender lo que queda evidente en este ensayo: El Arcipreste de Hita en el lejano siglo XIV dice cosas modernas, progresistas y acertadisimas por lo que a las relaciones entre los sexos respecta, en curioso y sorprendente contraste con las formuladas por intelectuales de epocas mas recientes. Por otra parte, las opiniones de Fray Luis de Leon, en el siglo XVI, pueden indicar una nueva etapa historica en la que la estructura familiar sufre cambios, de acuerdo con un cambio en la finalidad de esta institucion. El criterio para elegir los autores y las obras a comentar, ha consistido en espigar aquellos escritos que parecen mas significativos para el tema que nos ocupa y que han descollado por diferentes motivos. Asi ocurre con el Arcipreste de Talavera o Jaume Roig, ambos del siglo XV, y cuyos textos encierran una inaudita misoginia y un durisimo ataque frontal contra todo el sexo femenino. Sin embargo, encontraremos tambien, a lo largo de estos siglos, escritores que se precian de ser defensores de las mujeres, atendiendo escrupulosamente a la realidad que ellos observan. Asi lo hace Cervantes desde sus Novelas Ejemplares o Perez Galdos desde sus relatos realistas. El conjunto de unos y otros muestran la evolucion cambiante y con altibajos de la percepcion que sobre las mujeres se ha dado en nuestra cultura.

Why Catalans insist on their identity.The tragic fate of the millenary personality of Catalonia has rarely been fully appreciated abroad. Since the early eighteenth century its national voice has been submerged and fractured by a centralist state intent on its arbitrary, unitarian vision of a homogenized Spain. Catalan difference has emerged sporadically in the persons of such irrepressible geniuses as Gaudí, Dalí, Miró and Bigas Luna but, in the configuration of modern Europe, the relentlessinevitability of the unified state has imposed and re-imposed its singular cultural voice. Letras y Limpias is the first book to explore the literary significance of the figure of the curandera within Mexican American literature. Amanda Ellis traces the significance of the curandera and her evolution across a variety of genres written by leading Mexican American authors, including Américo Paredes, Rudolfo Anaya, Gloria E. Anzaldúa, Manuel Munoz, ire'ne lara silva, and more. Ellis explores the curandera in relationship to decoloniality, bioethics, and the topic of healing while recognizing the limitations and spiritual shortcomings of Western medicine. Ellis argues that our contemporary western health-care system does not know how to fully grapple with illnesses that patients face. Ellis reads the curandera's perennial representation as an ongoing example of decolonial love useful for deconstructing narrow definitions of health and personhood, and for grappling with the effects of neoliberalism and colonialism on the health-care industry. Letras y Limpias draws from Chicana feminist theory to assert the importance of the mindbodyspirit connection. Ellis conveys theoretical insights about the continual reimagining of the figure of the curandera as a watermark across Mexican American literary texts. This literary figure points to the oppressive forces that create susto and reminds us that healing work requires specific attention to colonialism, its legacy, and an intentional choice to carry forward the traditional practices rooted in curanderismo passed on from prior generations. By turning toward the figure of the curandera, readers are better poised to challenge prevailing ideas about health, and imagine ways to confront the ongoing problems that coloniality creates. Letras y Limpias shows how the figure of the curandera offers us ways to heal that have nothing to do with copays or medical professionals refusing care, and everything to do with honoring the beauty and complexity of any, every, and all humans.

Latinos across the United States are redefining identities, pushing boundaries, and awakening politically in powerful and surprising ways. Many--Afrolatino, indigenous, Muslim, queer and undocumented, living in large cities and small towns--are voices who have been chronically overlooked in how the diverse population of almost sixty million Latinos in the U.S. has been represented. No longer. In this empowering cross-country travelogue, journalist and activist Paola Ramos embarks on a journey to find the communities of people defining the controversial term, "Latinx." The Poetics of Speech in the Medieval Spanish Epic by
The Poetics of Speech in the Medieval Spanish Epic explores the composition of manuscript texts in thirteenth-century Spain. Of the vernacular epic poems originating with the minstrels of this era, only three full-length works remain: Cantar de Mio Cid, Poema de Fernán González, and Mocedades de Rodrigo, all preserved and recorded by members of the clergy. By analyzing expressive traits found in these three poems, Matthew Bailey links them to the cognitive processes that take place in the minds of speakers as narration unfolds. In Latin and other vernacular texts from the same period, authors identify their sources as oral, describe oral compositional techniques, and detail modes of processing texts in medieval monastic environments. Using the information provided by these details, as well as a close technical reading of the three epic poems, Bailey incorporates the methodologies and concepts of discourse analysis in an examination of expression in the Spanish epic and points convincingly to oral composition as the initial step in text creation for the period.

The book gives an overview to the field of Latino/a speculative, showing the great variety of stories being told by Latino/a writers. Fifty years ago the Latin American "Boom" introduced magical realism to the world; Latin@ Rising is the literature that has risen from the explosion that gave us García Márquez, Jorge Amado, Carlos Fuentes and others. The 21st century writers and artists of Latin@ Rising help us to imagine a Latino/a past, present, and future which have not been whitewashed by mainstream perspectives. Contrary to the popular perception, Latino/a Literature is not just magical realism and social realist protest literature--it also contains much speculative fiction.
