Keywords for Searching

When searching for sources in the library catalogue or databases, you want to use only your keywords, rather than full questions or sentences. Below are tips to help you narrow down your keywords.

  • Identify the main topics, words, or phrases of your research question.
  • Avoid filler words (to, be, the, was, how, etc.) and connecting words (compare, contrast, assess, etc.)
  • Try using synonyms or sub-topics of your concepts because various words might be used within articles
  • Think of keywords like #hashtags
  • Start with 2-3 keywords.  The more keywords you use, the more specific your results will be.
