Interlibrary Loan FAQ: Interlibrary Loan FAQ

Interlibrary Loan FAQ

  • What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Interlibrary Loan/CSU+ obtains materials not owned by our library, retrieving CSU campuses (CSU+) and from an international partnership of libraries.

  • Who is eligible for ILL services?

Currently registered CSU Stanislaus students, faculty, and staff may use ILL services.

  • What types of material can be requested through ILL?

Materials available include books, journal and newspaper articles, theses, dissertations, government documents, reports, videos, DVD’s, and music scores.

  • What types of materials may NOT be requested through ILL?

Current textbooks are not eligible for Interlibrary Loan, but may be requested through CSU+.  If you are unable to purchase a required text, please speak to your instructor about the possibility of placing a copy on Reserve in the Library.

  • How do I submit an ILL request?

Interlibrary Loan requests may be submitted via the OneSearch Interlibrary Loan request form.  For items not owned by CSU Stanislaus, most OneSearch and Find It! links will display a "Get a copy" option to submit a request for ILL.

  • How much does it cost?

There is no charge to you for ILL services. All costs are absorbed by the library, except fines for overdue materials ($1.00 per day). Replacement costs may be charged for lost or damaged materials. The library will consult with requesters regarding the need for specific materials if access or copyright fees are unusually high.

  • How long does it take to receive my books or articles?

The average time for a book (and other physical items) to arrive is three to five working days. PDFs of articles often arrive in one to three working days. Books shipped from out of state may take longer.

  • How will I be notified when my books or articles arrive?

Patrons will get an automatic email when books or articles arrive.

LOANS:  ILL materials are held at the Circulation Desk in Turlock or the Stockton Campus Library.

ARTICLES:  Most copies of articles, chapters, etc. will be delivered electronically to your ILLiad account.

  • What is the difference between my OneSearch Requests and ILLiad?

All articles and most books will be requested and loaned via your OneSearch account. Books not available from CSU+ or our OneSearch partners will be routed to the ILLiad service.   You will be notified by email if your book/request has arrived and was filled via ILLiad.  Use ILLiad to track for books which were not filled through CSU+.

  • What is the loan period for ILL books or other materials?  Can they be renewed?

CSU+ books received from other CSU campuses are checked out for 112 days. CSU+ books cannot be renewed.

Books from outside of CSU+ will have a loan period set by the lending library.  They sometimes may be renewed via ILLiad at the discretion of the lending library and ILLiad renewals should be requested before the due date. Overdue items may not be renewed.  One renewal is allowed per item.  If an item is non-renewable, this is noted on the book band. Renewals for non CSU+ books are requested online via the patron’s ILLiad account.  If a renewal is granted, you will receive an email notification with the new due date. If a renewal is denied, you will be notified by email that the item must be returned by the due date or within three days.

  • How will I know if my request can’t be supplied?

If Interlibrary Loan is unable to obtain the book or article requested, you will receive a cancellation notice via email, stating the reason. Librarians are available to assist in locating research materials.

  • What if I no longer need an item I requested?

Patrons should cancel items no longer needed via their OneSearch or ILLiad account.

  • I tried to logon to my ILLiad account, but it won’t accept my username or password.  What should I do?

ILLiad is now only needed for books not available via CSU+.  All articles will be delivered via OneSearch. Check ILLiad if you receive an email indicating the book was borrowed via ILLiad instead of CSU+/OneSearch.
