A Brief Introduction for Stockton Library Access Center Users

Books

Books in CSUS Library in Turlock: Library Catalog
Library Catalog is the catalog of books, theses, videos and other materials owned by CSU Stanislaus Library
Select All Library Materials to search for books in the Turlock collection.
To retrieve a book from Turlock:
  1. Search Library Catalog.
  2. In the full record display, note the author, title and call number for a desired book.
    (Call number is found at the bottom of the Full Record display.)
  3. Check the status (to the right of the call number).
    Books that say DUE: are currently unavailable.
  4. Check the location - (to the left of the call number).
    (Most Case and Ref books must be used in Turlock. Ask a librarian for help with these titles.)
  5. Complete online request form (current student ID needed).
  6. Most materials will be available in Stockton Library Access Center in 2 business days.


Books in Other Libraries in the Area: Local Library Catalogs
- catalogs of books, theses, videos and other materials held at libraries in the Stockton area
- searchable by subject, author, title and keyword
CSU Stanislaus students may check books out of the Delta College and Modesto Junior College libraries with a valid CSUS ID.

Books in Other Libraries Around the Nation: WorldCat
- catalog of books, theses, videos and other materials held at libraries nation-wide
- searchable by subject, author, title and keyword
To request a book be borrowed from another library:
  1. Identify author, title and publication date.
  2. Search Library Catalog to make sure CSU Stanislaus does not own it.
  3. Submit Interlibrary Loan request form.



Journal Articles

1) Choose a database to search
For many topics, a great place to start is Academic Search Elite (linked from the Stockton Library page). Academic Search Elite is a basic academic research database describing articles in key journals from most academic disciplines. Other databases providing more indepth coverage of a single discipline are available from the link on the Stockton Library page. (http://library.csustan.edu/stockton/)

2) Identify Research Articles in a database like Academic Search Elite
Academic Search Elitecovers scholarly research journals as well as popular magazines.
Limiting the search "to refereed publications." will list results from research journals only.
Sample search: air pollution and automobiles

3) Full-text of article may be available in the database
In Academic Search Elite, click  Full Text (HTML, PDF or Linked, if present) underneath the title of the journal to display full-text of the article. (Note: Not all library databases have full-text available.)

4) Full-text may be available online in another library database
In Academic Search Elite, if full-text is not available click FindIt Icon Find It! to see if and where journal is available.
At the Find It! menu: If first link says Full-text available, click link to display full-text of article.

5) Double check for availability in online journals
Electronic Journals list, linked from Stockton Library page, lists thousands of journals with full-text articles available online through the CSUS Library.
These titles are accessible off-campus with a student ID.

6) Check the Library Catalog to see if library has printed version of article.
    Search Library Catalog for the title of the journal.
    Check to see if library holds desired journal and specific issue needed.
Use Materials available from Main Library form to retrieve materials from Turlock.
Most materials will be available for pick-up in Stockton in 2 business days.

7) Request articles not owned by University Library through Interlibrary Loan
Use the "Request Materials not owned" form if article is not available in print (listed in the Library Catalog) or in an online journal.
Fill-out and submit periodical form to request journal articles.
Interlibrary Loan materials usually take 1-2 weeks to arrive in Stockton.
