Using Find It - Articles in Print or Microfilm

Print/microfilm holdings link indicates a hard copy of the article should be shelved in the University Library.

Most hard copy journals are shelved by title of the journal in the Periodicals Collection (in L210 - the large room with the Collaboratory computer lab and the Reference Desk).

Example:  Issues of the Journal of nervous and mental disease would be shelved alphabetically within the journals/periodicals beginning with "J", and within that journal the volumes and issues are shelved in chronological order.

To determine whether an article is in print or microfilm (and its exact location in the library), from a Find It! screen:

  1. Note the volume, issue, and/or year  and pages of the desired article.  You will need this information to retrieve the article from the shelves.
  2. Click the Print/microfilm holdings link to determine where in the University Library the physical item is shelved (usually Periodicals Collection).
  3. In the Library Catalog, you may need to click the title of the print journal (the entry with the "Location" listed below) to display the exact holdings (print or microfilm) and location.
  4. On a detailed screen, look at the "Holdings" line to see what volumes/issues/years are available in print and the SUPPLS line for what is available in microfilm.
  5. For help, use the "Send your citation to a Librarian" link on a Find It! screen or the Ask a Librarian service.

Find It! menus with a "Print/microfilm holdings" link:

  • A "hard copy" of the listed article should be shelved in the University Library

(Note: If the Find It! menu does not list a "Full text available online" option, this article is only available in a hard copy.)

  • Click the "Print/microfilm holdings" link to see the location for this particular journal

Most print or microfilm journals are shelved by title of the journal in the Periodicals Collection in the Library's Reference/Collaboratory room.
